01/23/14 Interesting audition experience today. Prepared for the particular role I was called in for, lets call it Woman 1, and was ready for the audition. Arrived to the lobby and casting called three of us female auditionees in. (The door
between the lobby and casting room was open and the casting team was inside waiting for us to walk through the door.) Just as we are about to enter the door, the lady auditioning for Woman 3 turns around a little frantically to introduce herself to me. We shake hands, say our names and I quietly tell her she has lipstick on her teeth. I wanted her to know before she goes into casting. And when I say she had lipstick on her teeth, I honestly do not know if she got any lipstick actually on her lips. She proceeds to enter the casting room and makes a huge statement like, "oh I have lipstick on my teeth, well that's a nice thing to say, oh great, lipstick on my teeth, embarrassing first impression..." I am in shock because she is now calling me out basically for letting her know. Had she not had an outburst, the casting room would have never known she had anything on her teeth at all. Luckily, one of the casting directors commented on how thankful she is when people let her know she has lipstick on her teeth and she definitely lets others know. I politely agree and we move on. After introductions and headshots are turned in, we realize that two of us are there to read for Woman 1 and one to read for Woman 3. So, they ask me to read for Woman 2 which is now basically a cold read. Oh well, the show must go on. So, we do the reading this way and then casting switches us around so I am now reading Woman 1, the part I was prepared for and the other for 2. Lipstick lady is still Woman 3. However, as we are going through the scene lipstick lady/Woman 3 somehow either by accident or on purpose skips a bunch of lines and we have to catch up and continue on. The bunch of lines she skips are Woman 1's main section of lines, my main section of lines. Ugh, this would have been a great gig and basically this audition was out of my control. I did what I could and now have to move on. Everything that happens is an experience. On another note, I have attended some webinars recently and have pulled a few things from each of them. This goes right along with my January 17th post saying that it is time for a bit of change and a bit of specificity. From the AMAW blog this week "...as your story unfolds, don’t get stuck on the chapter that you’re currently reading. You always have the ability to simply turn the page..." Time for a little different focus, growth and to work in new and exciting ways. More to come on this as I develop these tools. Overall, remembering to Take Action, Be Specific and Trust Yourself!
